Who supplies the power
The City of Huntsville bought its electric system from Alabama Power in 1940 and signed a contract with the Tennessee Valley Authority to buy power, HU’s history says. HU still buys its power from TVA and runs the local system. In a regional emergency HU works alongside TVA: after the April 2011 tornadoes cut power to HU’s entire service area, crews working with TVA and other utilities restored power to every habitable building in under 10 days.
How big the system is
As of Sept. 1, 2026, HU served 234,968 electric customers, 110,087 water customers and 65,832 natural gas customers across a service area of more than 800 miles, with about 900 employees, according to its key facts page. HU trucks are striped by department: red for electric, yellow for gas, blue for water and green for joint crews.

Your bill
