Huntsville Hospital Health System is building a $30 million, 24/7 emergency department on Memorial Parkway in North Huntsville, due December 2027. Hampton Cove breaks ground Wednesday.
North Huntsville is getting its own 24-hour emergency room.
Huntsville Hospital Health System has started building a $30 million freestanding emergency department at 10121 Memorial Parkway NW, near Bob Wade Lane and the Northern Bypass. The health system said it is the largest health care investment ever made in North Huntsville. Construction is expected to be finished in December 2027.
The health system announced the project in a news release on its website after leaders and city officials broke ground on the site Wednesday, Oct. 21.
Hampton Cove breaks ground Wednesday
The North Huntsville site is one of three new emergency departments the health system has announced. The health system said it will break ground on a second freestanding emergency department in Hampton Cove on Wednesday, Nov. 4. A third is planned for Madison, about five miles west. The release did not give a site or cost for either.
The three build on Crestwood Medical Center’s freestanding emergency department in Harvest, which opened in 2024, the health system said.
What the North Huntsville site will have
The health system said the facility will include:
- an emergency department open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, staffed by board-certified physicians
- CT scans and ultrasound
- laboratory services
- a helipad
Patients who need to be admitted or need more specialized care will be transferred to a hospital. The health system said the new site will also help manage demand at existing emergency rooms, including Huntsville Hospital’s Level I trauma center.
Who it is meant to serve
The health system said the site will serve North Huntsville and nearby communities, including the growing Winchester Road corridor and Hazel Green.
“North Huntsville is growing, and this is an important step in making sure emergency services keep pace with the community,” said Tracy Doughty, executive vice president of Madison County operations for HH Health.
“Having emergency care close to home gives families peace of mind and makes our neighborhoods stronger,” Mayor Tommy Battle said.
The health system said the project follows Physician Care North Huntsville, a primary care clinic that opened in June near Alabama A&M University. It said the area has historically had fewer convenient health care options.
What it means for you
- Nothing changes yet. The North Huntsville emergency department is not expected to open until December 2027. Until then, call 911 or go to an existing emergency room.
- For North Huntsville and Hazel Green families, the new site will put a 24-hour emergency room on Memorial Parkway NW near the Northern Bypass.
- For Hampton Cove, the groundbreaking Wednesday is the start of its own project. We will report the details the health system publishes.
