Registering
Register or update your address online, or print the state form and mail it to your county Board of Registrars. Once you are approved, the registrars mail a voter identification card with your polling place and districts, usually two to three weeks after you register, the city says. You do not need the card to vote. Check your status and polling place on the state’s My Info lookup.
Polling places in Huntsville
Huntsville has dozens of precincts. Find yours on My Info and vote only at the polling place assigned to you. The city publishes a map of its voting precincts, adopted in 2026. Absentee and regular ballots are available in Spanish, and an interpreter is provided at the polls on request; tell a poll worker.
Photo ID
Alabama requires a photo ID at the polls. Accepted IDs include a valid driver’s license or nondriver ID (or one expired less than 60 days), a free Alabama photo voter ID, a valid state-issued ID from any state, and a valid pistol permit with a photo, according to the Secretary of State’s ID page. If you have none, you can get a free Alabama photo voter ID from the Board of Registrars. A voter without ID may cast a provisional ballot, or may vote if two election officials identify the voter and sign an affidavit.
Absentee voting
Alabama has no in-person early voting period. Voters who qualify under state law can vote absentee. Apply to your county’s Absentee Election Manager with your name and address, a copy of your photo ID and an original signature. Emergency absentee rules cover voters with a qualifying emergency in the last five days before the election. Full rules are on the state’s absentee page.
What is on the ballot
Sample ballots for every county are on the Secretary of State’s 2026 general election sample ballot page. Results on election night come from each county; Madison County posts them on Madison County Votes, 256-532-3330. Results are unofficial until certified.
City elections
Huntsville’s municipal elections are run by the City Clerk, not the county. The 2026 city election was held Aug. 25, with a City Council District 3 runoff on Sept. 22; results are on the city’s election results page. The newly elected council takes the oath of office at 4 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2, in the City Council Chamber.
