Huntsville's new 1.3-mile Meek Greenway is open in north Huntsville, with parking at Mastin Lake Road. The last stretch to Alabama A&M is set to start construction in spring 2027.

A new 1.3-mile greenway is open in north Huntsville. The Meek Greenway runs from Sparkman Drive toward Alabama A&M University.

The city cut the ribbon at Mastin Lake Road and announced the opening Thursday, according to its news release. Construction began in 2023.

What is on the new greenway

The city’s release lists:

  • a 12-foot-wide paved path, 1.3 miles long
  • a raised crosswalk at Mastin Lake Road
  • a parking area at Mastin Lake Road, where the opening was held

Walkers, runners and cyclists can all use it, the city said.

The last stretch to campus comes next

The greenway does not reach Alabama A&M yet. A final 0.35-mile segment will connect it to the university. Construction on that piece is slated to begin in spring 2027, the city said, and will include a new connector road.

The open greenway, in green, runs north from the bottom of the map past Mastin Lake Road, where a parking symbol marks the lot, to a point south of Louis Crews Stadium. The future portion of the greenway, in orange, continues north to the Alabama A&M campus, and a future connector road is marked where the two meet.

Named for Opal Meek

The greenway honors Opal Meek, a longtime community advocate and neighborhood association leader, the city said.

“Opal Meek has dedicated her time to making north Huntsville a better place, and naming this greenway in her honor is a fitting tribute to the lasting impact she has made,” Mayor Tommy Battle said.

“I appreciate any and all support for this area,” Meek said. “We’re going to enjoy this greenway for years to come!”

District 1 council member Michelle Watkins said the path links the university with the neighborhoods around it. “It provides another way for residents and students to enjoy the outdoors, stay active and connect with the area around them,” she said.
