North Memorial Parkway now runs over Mastin Lake Road. The city says the underpass is due before Thanksgiving, and ALDOT lists lane closures into December.
Memorial Parkway now crosses Mastin Lake Road on an overpass in north Huntsville. The City of Huntsville, the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) and the office of Gov. Kay Ivey marked the opening with a ribbon cutting. The city announced the opening Friday.
The job is not finished. The city said the underpass at the interchange is still under construction. It expects that work to be done before Thanksgiving.
A signal-free parkway through the city
Mayor Tommy Battle said the overpass completes a long stretch of the parkway without stoplights.
“Drivers can now travel Memorial Parkway for more than 10 miles through the heart of the city with no traffic signals and no intersections,” Battle said.
District 1 Council Member Michelle Watkins said the overpass means a lot for north Huntsville.
“This area is growing with a recent surge in new home construction and lots more on the way,” Watkins said. “New retail developments have already happened and even more will be happening soon.”
State Sen. Sam Givhan and state Reps. Laura Hall and Rex Reynolds also attended, the city said.
What the project includes
The overpass is an ALDOT-led project under Restore Our Roads, the city’s road partnership with the state. The city’s project page for North Memorial Parkway at Mastin Lake Road lists:
- a new overpass at Mastin Lake Road
- about 1.73 miles of improvements along the parkway to Winchester Road
- about 1.5 miles of access road improvements between Stallworth Drive and Winchester Road
- sidewalks along both sides of the service roads
